on Friday 28 March..... continued
To
any athletics enthusiast throughout the world, the
names of Coe, Cram and Ovett are inextricably linked
to Great Britain. Once upon a time Great Britain
was at the helm of World middle and long-distance
running. Athletes were revered and coaches admired
and respected. In the 50's it was athletes like
Bannister, Chataway and Ibbotson leading the way...

second.
African 10,000m champion Moses Kipsiro from Uganda won
the men's race, edging out former world half marathon
winner Fabian Joseph of Tanzania.

Southwood and Johnny McKee won men's open relay. The

As an athletics enthusiast I have marvelled over the
years at the
prodigious talents of the Kenyan athletes. Their continous
treadmill of
talent, which for the past 40 years has had a defining
impact on the world of
athletics.
In 2007 the World Cross Country Championships will be
held in Mombassa
I can only envisage a powerful display of endurance
running. Unable to
attend due to work commitments I decided that this summer
I would
explore the hot bed of distance running and visit KENYA.

Interview
with John McLaughlin
Having decided to give running 'a go' after failed
attempts with rugby and
hockey John McLaughlin didn't do too badly. Athletes
the calibre of
Thomas Wessinghage, John Graham, Alberto Cova,
Ari Paunonen, Eddy
de Pauw, Pat Porter, John Robson, Pierre Levisse
and Leon Schots at
one stage in their respective careers felt the
brunt of the 'wee mans' ability! Continued

Belfast
International Cross
Country - Saturday 7
January 2006
Dathan
Ritzenhien finished
a good 3rd in the
Belfast
International Cross
Country. Ritzenhien,
Kosgei
(Kenya) and Kipsiro
(Uganda) traded places
for much
of the race before
Kosgei eventually
outsprinted
Kipsiro in the last
200m to win. For Ritzenhien
his run
was good return to
form and he was very
competitive
for all but the last
lap. Alister Cragg
finished 6th.
Although never with
the leaders after
the first lap he
ran well in his first
race back. The race
was run in cold
(2C), damp and very
overcast conditions.
Underfoot
the ground was mainly
dry with only a few
sections of
mud.
E Kidane (Ethiopia)
was the winner of
the womens
race outsprinting
two of her fellow
countrywomen over
the final few meters. Click
